A Van Cleef dupe is a piece that borrows the look of Van Cleef & Arpels' Alhambra jewelry — a rounded four-leaf clover motif, often in gold with a colored inlay — without the 18K gold, the real stones or the four-figure price. That's the whole idea, and it's why "van cleef dupe" gets searched thousands of times a month.
This guide covers what the original actually is, what it costs, how to tell a real one from a look-alike, and then 12 clover necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings from our shop, starting at $15.99. We'll be upfront in every entry about what matches and what doesn't — including the fact that none of our clovers are mother-of-pearl or onyx.
What is the Van Cleef clover called?
The clover is the Alhambra motif. Van Cleef & Arpels introduced it in 1968, starting with a long opera-length necklace of twenty clover-shaped motifs. The design mixes two ideas: the four-leaf clover as a symbol of luck, and the quatrefoil patterns of Moorish architecture — the name nods to the Alhambra palace in Granada, Spain.
What makes an Alhambra read as an Alhambra from across the room:
- Four rounded lobes, symmetrical, sitting flat — a quatrefoil rather than a stemmed "shamrock" clover.
- A beaded gold rim around each motif.
- A colored inlay in the center: mother-of-pearl, onyx, malachite, carnelian and others over the years, plus pavé diamonds.
- Motifs spaced along a fine chain, especially on the long necklaces and five-motif bracelets.
Over the decades the family grew: Vintage Alhambra is the classic size, Sweet Alhambra is smaller, Magic Alhambra plays with bigger and mixed sizes, and there are all-gold and openwork versions too.
How much does the real thing cost?
A lot, and more every year. After Van Cleef & Arpels' April 2025 price increase, the Vintage Alhambra pendant in yellow gold with mother-of-pearl was listed at about $3,100 in the US, and the five-motif Vintage Alhambra bracelet in the same materials at about $5,050. Earrings and the long necklaces run into the thousands of dollars as well.
| What you want | The original | What makes it expensive | Our closest pick |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single clover pendant | Vintage Alhambra pendant, about $3,100 (2025) | 18K gold, mother-of-pearl, beaded rim | Sterling silver pavé clover, $72.99 |
| Five-motif bracelet | Vintage Alhambra bracelet, about $5,050 (2025) | Five inlaid gold motifs | Pavé clover link bracelet, $83.49 |
| Clover earrings | Thousands of dollars | Gold + stone inlay | Quatrefoil drops from $15.99 |
| Clover ring | Thousands of dollars | Gold + stone inlay | Black clover pavé band, $21.49 |
So the question isn't whether a dupe will match the original. It won't. The question is which parts of the look matter to you, and what you want to wear in the shower.
What you're actually buying with a Van Cleef dupe
Our clovers are not mother-of-pearl, onyx, malachite or carnelian. Their centers are cubic zirconia (CZ) pavé, black enamel, or a gold-and-silver glitter finish. If the white iridescent inlay is the part you love, be aware that nothing in this guide reproduces it.
Metals vary, and it matters for everyday wear:
- Stainless steel is the most carefree: hypoallergenic for most people, won't tarnish or turn your skin green, and handles water and sweat.
- Sterling silver is brighter and whiter, and our silver is often rhodium-plated to slow tarnish, but it can still tarnish over time and wants to come off for the pool.
- Plated brass and iron (gold- or rhodium-finish) give you the look for less; the finish is less durable than steel, so keep these dry and store them separately.
Will a clover dupe tarnish or turn green? Stainless steel won't. Plated brass and iron can wear at the edges with heavy friction, which is where cheap dupes earn their bad reputation — more on care below.
Van Cleef clover necklace dupe picks
Honest status report first: right now we have fewer clover necklaces in stock than clover earrings, and none of them is a long twenty-motif station chain. Here's what we'd actually buy.

Our pick: Sterling Silver CZ Four Leaf Clover Pave Pendant Necklace — $72.99. A single clover covered in CZ pavé, on an 18" chain, in sterling silver. What matches: one lucky clover worn alone, which is how most people wear the Vintage Alhambra pendant. What doesn't: this is a classic four-leaf clover with heart-shaped leaves and a little stem, not the flat, rounded quatrefoil with a beaded rim — and it's silver-tone, not yellow gold. Think "clover charm" more than "Alhambra copy."

Our pick: Brass CZ Pave Circle Flower Dangle Pendant Necklace — $17.49. The clover here is small: an open four-lobed motif with a single CZ in the middle sits right where the chain meets the pendant, with a pavé circle dangling below. It's the subtle, Sweet-size nod rather than a statement, in rhodium-finish brass on a 16" chain. Good for layering; not the pick if you want the clover to be the main event.
If you want the full long-necklace look, the trick is layering: pair one of these with a plain chain from our chain necklaces and add clover earrings (below) to repeat the motif.
Van Cleef bracelet dupe picks
The five-motif bracelet is the most-copied piece in the collection, and it's also the one people wear every day — which makes durability matter more than anywhere else.

Our pick: Brass Silver CZ Four Leaf Clover Link Bracelet — $83.49. This is the closest thing to the motif bracelet we have: a line of rounded, pavé-covered clovers joined by short links, in rhodium-finish brass with CZ, 7". What matches: the rounded quatrefoil shape and the repeating-motif rhythm, much like the all-pavé versions of the original. What doesn't: there are more motifs, set closer together, than on a five-motif bracelet; it's silver-tone; and it's the priciest pick here — but it's the only one that truly reads as "clover bracelet."

Our pick: Brass Gold CZ Flower Link Bracelet — $19.49. The budget, gold-tone option: rounded flower-shaped links, each with a bezel-set CZ in the center, in gold-finish brass, 7.5". Candidly, the links are six-petal flowers, not four-leaf clovers, so this gets the "gold motif links with a center stone" feeling rather than the clover itself. From arm's length on a stacked wrist, it does the job.
Van Cleef earrings dupe picks
Earrings are where our clover selection is strongest, and where the budget options genuinely look the part.

Our pick: Iron Two Tone Silver Gold Glitter Quatrefoil Flower Drop Earrings — $15.99. Two stacked quatrefoils per earring, each with a silver rim and a gold glitter center — the same "two motifs dangling" idea as the original's drop earrings. What doesn't match: the rim is smooth rather than beaded, the center is a glitter finish rather than a stone, and it's rhodium-finish iron, so keep them dry.

Our pick: Iron Gold Glitter Quatrefoil Clover CZ Drop Earrings — $15.99. A single gold-tone quatrefoil with a sparkly silver-glitter center, hanging from a small CZ on a fishhook. The clover shape is the most Alhambra-like in this guide. It's gold-finish iron and a flat, fairly large motif, so it reads bolder than a Vintage-size earring.

Our pick: Stainless Steel Silver Black Enamel Clover Chain Earrings — $19.99. A small black clover stud with fine chains that thread through and hang behind the ear. The black is enamel, not onyx, but the black-clover-on-silver look is the one people mean when they search for the onyx versions. Stainless steel, so this is the pair you can forget you're wearing. Stock is limited on this one.

Our pick: Brass CZ Pave Four-Leaf Clover Hook Drop Earrings — $31.49. Open, looped clover outlines covered in CZ pavé, on hooks. This is the "all-sparkle" direction rather than the inlaid one — closer in spirit to the pavé-diamond clovers. Rhodium-finish brass; the lobes are open loops, not solid.

Our pick: Sterling Silver CZ Flower Clover Stud Earrings — $27.49. Small four-lobed studs in rhodium-finish sterling silver with CZ — the tiny, everyday, Sweet-size idea. They're petite and bright white rather than gold, and they sit close to the lobe. Our most practical everyday clover studs if you prefer real silver.

Our pick: Brass Gold CZ Four-Petal Flower Stud Earrings — $31.49. If you want gold and sparkle, this is it: a four-petal flower paved in CZ, in gold-finish brass, with a faux pearl peeking out beneath the flower. The petals are softer and more flower-like than a quatrefoil, so it's "inspired by" rather than a close match.
Clover rings to finish the set

Our pick: Stainless Steel Black Enamel Clover CZ Pave Slim Band Ring — $21.49. A black enamel clover set on a slim band with a line of CZ pavé down each side, in stainless steel. It matches the black clover earrings above, so together they make a set for about $41. The black is enamel, not onyx; the metal is silver-tone.

Our pick: Brass Silver CZ Flower Clover Cluster Cocktail Ring — $17.49. A row of little four-petal clovers, each made of CZ petals, linked around the finger. It's a band of repeating motifs — the ring version of the bracelet idea. Rhodium-finish brass, limited sizes; check the ring size chart before ordering.
How to tell a real Alhambra from a look-alike
If you're shopping resale, or just curious, these are the details experts look at:
- The signature. Authentic pieces are stamped "Van Cleef & Arpels" or "VCA" with a reference number. A stamp reading only "Van Cleef" is often cited as a red flag.
- The gold mark. Pieces made in France carry the French eagle-head assay mark for 18K gold.
- The beaded rim. On real pieces, the beads around every motif are even in size and spacing. Uneven, flattened or smudgy beads are the easiest tell.
- The inlay. Real mother-of-pearl has a shifting, living shimmer; real onyx is an even, deep black. Plastic and resin look flat.
- The price. If a "real" Alhambra costs a few hundred dollars, it isn't one.
A piece sold as genuine that fails these checks may well be a counterfeit, and that's a different thing from what we sell. Our pieces don't carry anyone else's name or logo, aren't sold as authentic anything, and aren't replicas — they're clover jewelry at an everyday price.
How to style clover jewelry
- Keep it to one or two clovers. A clover pendant plus clover studs looks intentional; clovers on every part of you looks like a costume.
- Layer with plain chains. The long-necklace look is really "one statement piece plus simple chains." Mix a 16" and 18" length.
- Mix metals on purpose. A silver clover next to a gold chain looks modern, not mismatched — the two-tone earrings above make that easy.
- Stack a bracelet with a bangle. One motif bracelet and one plain bangle from our bangles and cuffs is the classic wrist.
Care: making a clover dupe last
- Stainless steel: wear it anywhere; wipe with a soft cloth. It won't tarnish.
- Sterling silver: take it off for the pool and the beach, store it in a closed pouch, and polish with a silver cloth when it dulls.
- Plated brass and iron: keep them dry — put them on after lotion, perfume and hairspray, take them off to shower and swim, and store them apart so the finish doesn't scratch.
- CZ pavé: a soft brush, warm water and a drop of dish soap bring the sparkle back.
Every order ships free in the US, and you have 30 days to return pieces unworn with tags and packaging.
FAQ
Is it legal to buy a Van Cleef dupe? Buying jewelry inspired by a popular motif is legal; buying counterfeits — pieces falsely branded as Van Cleef & Arpels — is not something to support. Look for sellers who describe their pieces honestly and don't use the brand's name or logo on the product.
What is the Van Cleef clover necklace called? It's the Alhambra, introduced by Van Cleef & Arpels in 1968. The best-known pieces are the Vintage Alhambra pendant and the long multi-motif necklaces.
Are your clovers mother-of-pearl or onyx? No. Our clover centers are CZ pavé, black enamel or a glitter finish. We don't currently have a clover with a mother-of-pearl, onyx or malachite inlay.
Will a clover dupe turn my skin green? Stainless steel won't, and it doesn't tarnish. Plated brass and iron can wear with friction and moisture over time, so keep them dry to make the finish last.
What's the best Van Cleef bracelet dupe here? For the clover shape, the pavé Four Leaf Clover Link Bracelet ($83.49). For a gold-tone motif bracelet on a small budget, the Gold CZ Flower Link Bracelet ($19.49), with the caveat that its links are flowers, not clovers.
Can I shower in a clover necklace? Only in stainless steel. Take sterling silver, plated brass and iron pieces off before showering or swimming.
